Weather Data Intiative

As a bold step to address the poor status of weather monitoring infrastructure and historical weather data in the Country, TAMASA Nigeria hadestablished a partnership with Kukua Inc (b.V.) to roll-out 30 weather stations across the 3 focal states.

The first phase of the installation had been completed and the second wascommenced by the end of October. The weather stations were designed to generate real-time and remotely accessible weather data to support predictive agronomy research, advisory support to farmers, and development of product and services that enhanced maize value chain in Nigeria. Based on the need for sustainability of this initiative, we went beyond Kukua partnership to form a Weather Station Advisory Committee (WeSAC), with representatives drawn from Agricultural institutions within the region where stations were being installed.

WeSAC’s major mandate was to ensure the proper functioning of the stations, archiving of data, and sharing data with relevant parties. The multi-institutional nature of the 8-man committee was to foster needed buy-in from government, and long-term commitment regarding maintenance by designated technical contacts/members.
